Within the framework of the project "Implementation of children's rights through the means of AAC", in Gorodishche house- boarding institution information about communicative and additional ways of communication with the help of a quest was disseminated !
This quest was attended by most of the staff of the institution as well as teachers-defectologists of the Center for Correctional and Developmental Education and of the regional schools. The preparatory work of the quest included the formation for the groups of participants, the selection of materials and means, the creation of stations under different names and tasks for them.
At the beginning of the quest, the participants were given an introductory speech by the Deputy Director - I.E. Adilbekova, who spoke about the purpose of the game, its rules and objectives.
The main objectives of the game were:
-to acquaint employees with low-tech and high-tech means of AAС;
- to form communicative competence with the help of methods and means of AAC;
- to promote the development of team cohesion, mutual assistance, the ability to work in a team.
The route of the game included the following stations: "Country of Pecs cards" - work with communication albums, passports, beads; “ World of Modern Gadgets” station - tasks on a tablet, “Go Talk Communicator” station - work with a communicator and “ IT-Technology Park” station - work with a communication button and a task on an eye tracker device. According to the rules, participants were to go through the entire route of the quest and complete certain tasks.
The participants were divided into groups: medical staff; attendants (nannies and nurses); technical staff; a group of catering workers and a group of defectologist teachers.
At the stations, each group was met by "person on duty", who told in details about each AAC facility located at the given station, about how to communicate using this facility or method. After this review, the participants were to try on the role of a non-speaking person and complete a certain task, after which the group received the coveted letter. So, after going through all the stations and collecting all the letters, the participants were to compose and read a message about the AAC from non-speaking children.
So by communicating with each other in a non-verbal way and completing tasks, the groups of participants reached the intended goal and collected a message in which the non-speaking guys told what AAC means for them - “AAC is the need of my life!”
All participants of the game received a lot of positive emotions, learned about simple and high-tech means of communication, tried to communicate using them.
During the event, the participants experienced the difficulties that non-speaking people face and at the same time found ways to solve them. Employees participating in the game realized that people who do not speak colloquially can express their thoughts, desires and needs on an equal footing with speakers using AAC tools. Employees of the team got the opportunity to understand their residents.
Discussions of the quest game by the participants continued at the workplace with those who could not participate. They shared their impressions and acquired knowledge and little experience.
All employees-participants liked it and in the future we also plan to practice activities aimed at training the AAC of our employees.
