Knowledge of the rights of children and people with disabilities is necessary to create a developing environment for children and a responsible attitude to work in the house-boarding institution.

Therefore, we held a seminar for employees of the state institution “Ivenetsky house-boarding school for disabled children with specific features of physical development”. The main goal of the seminar was to form knowledge about the rights of children with disabilities, to discuss plans for their implementation in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

25 employees of the Ivenetsky house-boarding school were able to consolidate knowledge in the field of the rights of children and people with disabilities, talk about what rights can be realized and which aren’t quite, make suggestions on creating conditions for the rights in a house-boarding school.

Working in groups, educators, teachers, doctors, assistant educators and even kitchen workers discussed how to ensure more effective realization of the rights of children with disabilities, namely the right to family, the right to education, the right to speak and express their opinions, the right to protection from violence and exploitation, the right to health, the right to equality and respect for differences.

The most problematic were the right to health and the right to family. All employees noted that there is a shortage of reliable medicines, new rehabilitation methods and modern technical means for rehabilitation, existing programs for the rehabilitation of children with disabilities, wheelchair users.

The general opinion was that children with disabilities, foster-child of the house-boarding school need the care of their relatives or substitute families, in strengthening child-parent relationships need help.

The workshop also helped staff to exchange views, learn more about successful practices of communication with children.
