Alternative and Additional Communication: Communication Develops and Pleases

For 3 days in Gorodishche  house-boarding institution experts were  observing the work of trainee of teachers in using alternative and additional communication. They communicated with children, studied the possibilities of creating a favorable communication environment.
The project “Realization of rights through communication” and what the specialists of the boarding  institution, who have taken a course in alternative and additional communication and have been trying to use AAC in their work with non-verbal children, are doing is gradually ceasing to be a project - this is already life, a daily routine.
AAC trainee-teachers in this house- boarding institution  work with non-speaking children with the help of communication books, portraits, card sets, communication board in the classrooms. They use technical means of alternative communication like buttons, gotoki, tablets and an eye tracker in  the educational process. Some children have even begun to talk and have started to use words and phrases, while others, through communication with the teacher and others, have learned to regulate their behavior and make choices.
The main question still remains - how to make communication with the help of AAC  easier. After spending these three days together, we developed the following steps for communication: to involve teachers-defectologists in active interaction through the succession notebook;  to create a supportive communication environment in groups with reminders of the symbols that children have learned, to individualize communication tools, to create for each child their own boxes of AAC so that he/she knows where to find it, to use AAC in cultural events, to discuss children's achievements more often. And most importantly, all adults and children should speak with the help of AAC, because it's interesting. That is why we tried to play with the help of AAC. This is an easy way to get everyone involved.
